Slowgrass: Avett Brothers Make You Swoon
Turn on your favorite Bill Monroe song, reduce the speed about half as much, add lyrics about broken hearts and you’ve got one of my favorite bands, The Avett Brothers.
Hailing from North Carolina, these boys have an interesting twist on traditional bluegrass in the fact that they don’t play bluegrass at all. Many assume they are a bluegrass band because of the instruments used (banjo, upright bass, guitar) but in all honesty it is pop music using bluegrass instruments, and what a beautiful combination it is.
Their album Emotionalism is a modern day masterpiece. Songs “All My Mistakes” and “The Ballad of Love and Hate” sum up the album quite well: lovely melodies, great harmony, unique words, and soul capturing music.
Touring America and Europe
Now ending a North American tour, you can sure bet you’ll be able to see them across Europe in 2011.
After hearing a few of their shows, I must say I am impressed with their concert ability. It is very obvious that their music is very personal and powerful as they give 100% energy to each city they visit. From fast punk style rhythms of “Slight Figure of Speech” to smooth Oldies riffs of “Pretend Love”, The Avett Brothers bring all aspects of their music to each of their shows. Well worth the money.
Their songs are worth checking out, and even if you have never heard them, a concert would surely get you hooked. While the theme of their lyrics stays the same, the songs are beautiful and plentiful.
